
GIU Appoints Dr. Alhassan Fouard Kanu as Affiliated Professor
Graham International University (GIU) is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Alhassan Fouard Kanu, a Sierra Leonean, as an Affiliated Professor, further strengthening the university’s mission of advancing global education through strategic partnerships and distinguished faculty.
Prof. Kanu, an internationally recognized health systems expert, brings over 20 years of experience in public health leadership, health security, and emergency response across Africa and beyond. He has served in key roles with the World Health Organization (WHO), including Health Emergency Officer at the WHO Africa Regional Office in Nairobi, and previously as Health Systems Specialist and Health Services Continuity Pillar Lead at WHO/AFRO in Congo Brazzaville.

Prior to joining WHO, Dr. Kanu worked for the Sierra Leone Ministry of Health where he contributed to national health system strengthening and the development of major health policies and strategic plans. Beyond his national work, Prof. Kanu has provided consultancy expertise for international organizations including UNICEF, World Bank, IAEA, and several NGOs.
Academically, Prof. Kanu is exceptionally accomplished, holding three doctoral degrees—a Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) from Walden University (USA), a PhD in Health Policy, Planning & Management from Paris Graduate School (France), and a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) in Executive Leadership in Health from the European School of Management & Leadership (Czech Republic). He also holds three master’s degrees from UK universities: Master of Public Health (Staffordshire University), MSc-International Public Health Nutrition (Westminster University), and MBA in Public Health Management (Cumbria University).
Alongside his professional engagements, Prof. Kanu is Adjunct Professor at Paris Graduate School and part-time faculty at the Ernest Bai Koroma University of Science and Technology in Sierra Leone. He is also the Founder and CEO of the Institute for Health Professional Development (IHPD) and the Centre for Community & Public Health Improvement (CPHI), both of which are driving forces in strengthening health systems through capacity building and integrated health service delivery.
Prof. Kanu is a Fellow of the African Institute of Public Health, the Royal Society of Public Health (UK), and a member of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (UK). His prolific academic contributions include peer-reviewed publications, policy development, and peer-review services for international journals.
